Unlock the art of quilting with our Quilting for Beginners class! Whether you’re new to sewing or looking to sharpen your skills, this course is designed to introduce you to the basics of quilting while creating a charming quilt using the "Heartland" 3-yard quilt pattern.

Required Supplies:

  • Pattern: All students will need to purchase the "Heartland" 3-yard quilt pattern for $5.99. The pattern will be available for purchase at Quilter’s Cottage.
  • Sewing Machine: A sewing machine in good working order, including bobbins, cords, and presser feet.
  • Fabric & Thread: Bring your own or purchase fabric on the first day of class.
  • Tools:
    • Rotary cutter (45mm) and a 24-inch ruler, if you have them.
    • Fabric scissors.
    • Seam ripper.
    • Quilters pins (glass head preferred) or Acorn fabric glue.
    • A container or box for organizing fabric.

Class Schedule:

Day One:

  • Introductions: Meet your instructor and fellow students.
  • Fabric Basics:
    • Types of fabric: cotton, poly-cotton blends, batiks, flannels.
    • Understanding width, selvage, and fabric grains (lengthwise, crosswise, bias).
    • Choosing colors.
  • Threads & Needles:
    • Differences between sewing and quilting threads and needles.
  • Pins, Glue & Tools:
    • Comparing pinning, gluing, and nesting techniques.
    • Introduction to rotary cutters, rulers, cutting mats, and irons.
  • Shopping: Learn how to press fabric and select materials.
  • Cutting & Labeling:
    • Tips for cutting and labeling fabric accurately.
    • How to read the pattern and the importance of labeling pieces.
  • Homework: Finish cutting and labeling all fabric pieces before the next class.

Day Two:

  • Review & Questions: Answer any questions from Day One.
  • Sewing Blocks: Begin sewing the quilt blocks together.
  • Homework: Finish sewing all quilt blocks at home.

Day Three:

  • Review & Questions: Answer any questions from Day Two.
  • Squaring Up: Learn how to square up your quilt blocks.
  • Sashing & Cornerstones: Assemble quilt blocks with sashing and cornerstones.
  • Borders: Sew borders onto your quilt.

Bonus Class:

There will be a separate class on bindings later in the year, once your quilt has been quilted.
