How to Bind Your Quilt

With Debi Workman

Date: May 6, 2025 | Time: 10:00 am - 3:00 pm | Cost: $40

Join Debi Workman for a hands-on, lecture/demo class focused on the essential skill of quilt binding! Whether you're new to quilting or looking to refine your technique, this class will guide you through the process of adding the perfect finishing touch to your quilts.

The class will begin with a detailed lecture and demonstration, followed by a break for lunch. Afterward, you'll have the opportunity to practice what you've learned on your own sample quilt. Please bring either a small quilt or a 10" square that has been layered and quilted (a simple X through the square will work).

What to bring:

  • Sewing machine in working order with a 1/4" foot
  • Thread matching your binding fabric
  • Fabric for binding*
  • A small quilt or 10" square (or multiples) to practice on
  • Snack or lunch

In this class, Debi will teach both machine and hand binding techniques.

*Pre-Class Binding Preparation:*

To help you get ready for class, here’s a quick guide to determine how much binding fabric you'll need:

  1. Find the perimeter of your quilt by measuring all four sides and adding them together.
  2. Add 20 inches to your total perimeter.
  3. Choose your binding width—we recommend using 2 ½” wide strips.
  4. Divide the total length of binding needed by 40" to get the number of fabric strips required.
  5. Round up to the nearest whole number of strips and multiply by your chosen binding width to calculate the number of inches to cut.
  6. Divide that number by 36" to determine yardage. Round up to the nearest 1/4 yard for your total yardage.
